AFSCME Day On The Hill 2018 Recap

On March 20th, over a thousand AFSMCE members from across the State of Minnesota, including over 80 Local 34 members descended on the State Capitol for our annual Day on the Hill event. The theme for Day on the Hill 2018 was “Together We Rise” and lobbying visits with legislators focused on the following issues and concerns:

  • Support our freedom to join together in strong unions
  • Extend opportunity to all, not just the wealthy
  • Reinvest in the work we do
  • Guarantee retirement security
  • Staff up for safe workplaces
  • Move forward on transportation
  • Protect children and elders
  • Ban private prisons

Speakers for the rally in the Capitol rotunda included Judy Wahlberg, President, AFSCME Council 5, Mike West, corrections counselor, Department of Corrections, Minnesota Correctional Facility St. Cloud, Local 599, Tia McDougle, corrections counselor, DOC, MCF St. Cloud, Local 599; and partner Zack Frank, corrections counselor, DOC, MCF St. Cloud, Local 599, Bryan Kirsch, maintenance worker, MnDOT, Local 221, Deena Thurmond, eligibility specialist, Public Employees Retirement Association, Local 2829 and finally John P. Westmoreland, Executive Director, AFSCME Council 5.
