This is the latest from what AFSCME is doing nationally to defend workers and programs:
(AFSCME) The new administration wants to freeze federal money that helps communities, including billions of dollars that fund AFSCME jobs and the services we provide.
The move, which is straight out of the Project 2025 playbook, temporarily brought services like Medicaid to a screeching halt in many states. Portals for Head Start and other vital programs were also temporarily shut down.
AFSCME President Lee Saunders said, “These actions will hurt those who are most vulnerable: families, seniors and people with disabilities who depend on Medicaid for health care; new mothers and newborns who need nutrition assistance; kids who receive education through Head Start or their food through school breakfast and lunch programs; people who rely on housing assistance to keep a roof over their heads, and so many others.”
While the order was rescinded on Wednesday, that does little to calm the uncertainty many people in our communities feel, as efforts to target funding on which working families depend are underway.
Meanwhile, the funding freeze comes as attacks on workers by anti-union extremists are ramping up.
“The Senate just confirmed a billionaire hedge fund manager to run the Treasury department,” Saunders said, “and is about to confirm Russell Vought, the architect of Project 2025, who will immediately seek to slash public services to hand out trillions in tax cuts to his wealthy friends. Make no mistake: this funding freeze is his handiwork.”
And AFSCME is fighting back on other fronts as well, having filed a lawsuit to push back on the administration’s attempt to turn the federal public service from a workforce of dedicated professionals to one filled with political cronies.
We’re not stopping there.
Workers need to GET ORGANIZED
It’s simple: the bigger we are, the more power we have to fight back against these attacks. By going to a union meeting, signing up for text alerts about your union, or even getting a co-worker to sign a union card, we’ll be in the best position to tell extremist politicians and billionaires that we don’t want to just get by; we deserve to thrive.
