Hennepin County Commissioners Open 2025 with Swearing-in Ceremony

The Hennepin County Commissioners held their first meetings of 2025 on Tuesday. Due to maintanance at the Government Center, meetings are being moved to the ‘625 building’ which is across the street from the Hennepin County Government Center.

The first matter of business before the first meeting and following Regional Railroad Authority meeting was to swear in the recently elected commissioners who are all incumbents.

Commissioner Jeffery Lunde represents district 1 which covers Brooklyn Park, Brooklyn Center, Osseo, New Hope, Crystal and Robbinsdale. He won the district with more than 76% of the vote in November. Commissioner Debbie Goettel represents District 5 which covers Bloomington, Richfield, Eden Prairie and Chanhassen. She won with nearly 68% of the vote in November. Commissioner Heather Edelson represents district 6 which covers many western cities including Edina. Hopkins, Minnetonka, Wayzata, Excelsior, Orono and stretches to Mound. Commissioner Kevin Anderson represents district 7 which covers Northwestern Hennepin County including Plymouth, Maple Grove, Champlin, Medina, Cochran, Rogers and other western towns in the county. The first commissioners meeting was held after the four members swearing in. Commissioner Irene Fernando was chosen to continue as the board’s chair without debate. Commissioner Debbie Goettel was then selected to continue on as Vice-Chair without debate.

The agenda for the day was mostly procedural. The board went on to quickly approve items regarding accepting applications for certain jobs in the county, apply for grants and pay for agreed upon contracts.

The next meeting of the board is Tuesday, January 14. That day also marks the start of the 2025 legislature in St. Paul.
